CoronaVirus - everything you should know about
Current Statistics and Information
- There is global panic created due to 2019-nCoV, one of the five coronaviruses which includes SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) and MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome).
- It was identified in January 2020 as the causative agent of an outbreak of viral pneumonia centered around Wuhan, China. The virus has caused a widespread outbreak and a total of 20,623 (including 20,471 in China, Hong Kong and Macau) confirmed cases of novel coronavirus infection including 427 deaths (including one in the Philippines) have been reported across the world as of 03 February 2020.
- A total of three confirmed cases have been reported in India. The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare of India confirmed the first case of coronavirus on 30 January 2020, a student who arrived in Kerala from Wuhan and tested positive for the virus. The person is currently being monitored and is said to be in a stable condition.
- In India, the highest number of coronavirus suspected cases are in Kerala, while suspects have also been reported in other states including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, Maharastra, Telangana, Karnataka, and Rajasthan.
- India temporarily suspended the e-visa issue to those in China and cancelled the ones already issued, on 02 February.
What is 2019-novel coronavirus?
- Coronaviridi are a whole family of coronaviruses that causes disease in mammals and birds.
- Viruses are sometimes considered to be living and non-living both as they aren't made up of cells but they have ability to replicate and carry DNA or RNA.
- Coronavirus carries RNA which contains information to replicate itself.
How it infects your body?
- To contract the coronavirus you have to come in contact with the virus, either through an infected person's physical contact, sneezing, coughing or touching a surface that holds the virus and then touching your mouth or nose before washing hands.
- When a virus enters a body, its DNA or RNA acts as a key and once the virus finds the right cell in right species, it uses the key to enter and attack.
- Once the coronavirus enters your body, it attacks your body cells, kind of hijacks your cells and uses it own RNA to make protiens ultimately producing millions, making your cells a virus making machine. Thats why viruses are sometimes considered non-living as they use other body to reproduce or replicate.
- As the cells begin to damage, our body senses this harmful foreign agent and activates the immune system and sends a response attack by producing antibodies which are created by your DNA. The cells send a messenger RNA from the right section of DNA to the ribosomes, ultimately making millions of relevant protiens to fight with the virus. As the immune system cant catch the virus bodies directly, our body takes long time to recover.
- All the symptoms are the signs of your immune system fighting with the virus.
Symptoms and their reasons
- Increase in body temperature - as it helps your immune system function better and creates a more hostile environment for the virus.
- Cold and Cough - as body creates more snot or mucus which makes it tougher for the virus to attach to the cells and get rid of dead viruses.
- Weakness, Fatigue or Tiredness - because body prioritizes to fight with virus instead of regular basic body functions.
- Body pain or sore bones - because the bones are making more WBCs (White Blood Cells).
- Suffocation - WBC's produce chemicals that causes leakage of fluid in lungs leading to lack of oxygen and maybe organ failure in severe cases.
How long does it take to recover?
- A healthy immune system can get easily fight the virus and get your body rid of it within few weeks
- While, people with compromised immune system which is often in elderly or very young people may face problems.
- Older people and anyone with pre-existing medical conditions, like asthma, diabetes or heart disease, appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the new coronavirus, according to the WHO.
Do's
- Observe good personal hygiene.
- Practice frequent hand washing with soap.
- Follow respiratory etiquettes — cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing.
- Wear a mask if you have respiratory symptoms such as cough or running nose.
- Seek medical attention promptly.
- If you feel sick while travelling, report to health authorities/immigration.
Dont's
- Don’t plan travels if sick.
- Avoid close contact with people who are unwell or showing symptoms of illness, such as cough, running nose etc.
- Avoid contact with live animals and consumption of raw/undercooked meats.
- Avoid travel to live animal markets or where animals are slaughtered.
Facts and Myths
- Will eating lots of garlic help? - Garlic is considered a healthy food with some antimicrobial properties – but there are no indications it's helping anyone fight off 2019-nCoV.
- Vaccines against pneumonia and flu do not provide protection against the novel coronavirus, says the WHO.
- The 2019-nCoV may have come from animals, but your pets are not likely to be part of the equation.
- There is no danger in accepting parcels from china or infected areas, as coronavirus do not survive long on objects.
So, should you panic or not?
- If you think of numbers death toll of novel coronavirus is 427 to around 20,000 infected people, which is about 2 to 3 percent, while disease like SARS had a death rate of 10% and Ebola has been upto 50%.
- Also, over thousands of people die every year due to heart and respiratory diseases which is comparatively higher than coronavirus
- So, Don't panic due to media and news. Just take proper precautions and care of yourself and others.
